Transition Your Skin From Summer To Fall

Transition Your Skin From Summer To Fall

Fall is in the air and we are here for it!

As the cooler weather is upon us, our skin is also changing and we’re here to help you take control of it! Here are a few tips to help alleviate your skin conditions from Summer to Fall.

During the Summer, our skin tends to produce a lot more oil due to the increase in temperature and humidity. With Fall comes a decrease in temperature and humidity which can make the air very dry. This can exacerbate a lot of skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and dry - flakey skin. It also contributes to one of our biggest seasonal concerns: breakouts.

Why is Fall the breakout season?

As Fall approaches, our skin becomes dry and dehydrated which results in dead skin cells building up on the surface. Meanwhile, our skin’s natural oil production is still occurring 24/7. As the dead skin is mixed with our own oil, plus the excess from the Summer, this can get trapped inside of our pores. The mixture of trapped oil, dead skin cells and bacteria is what tends to make us the breakout acne star of the season. Have you thought about getting a facial? Fall is a really great time to visit your local facialist or holistic esthetician to give your skin a seasonal reset!

Here are a few other tips to help ease your skin’s transition from Summer to Fall:

  1. Gentle Internal Cleanse

Most skin breakouts are caused from within. The first step to fixing any skin issue is to start by taking care of yourself from the inside out (we’re talking about your gut!) Diet and gut health play a HUGE part in the well-being of your skin. And we don’t know who needs to hear this but: drink more water! HYDRATE! A simple but effective way to kickstart your digestion and boost your immune system is by drinking lukewarm water mixed with lemon and ginger. The acid in the lemon juice will help with breaking down food and ginger helps to stimulate digestion. This simple combination in the morning will also help with flushing out your body - especially your small intestine where a lot of bacterial overgrowth resides.

  1. Switch to Gentle Exfoliators

Exfoliating your skin is a fantastic way to get rid of built-up dry, dead skin. However, it is also important to not strip away too much of the skin’s natural oils - resulting in more dry skin. Opting for a more gentle exfoliator would be recommended in the Fall. Also, you should reduce the number of times you exfoliate in your weekly routine (1-2 times per week should be plenty for most people).

  1. Minimize Pores with Clay-based Masks

Yes, your pores can be enlarged in the Summer due to sweat, the sun and excess oil. In the Fall, your pores may look more visible because the skin becomes dry and tight. The first step to minimizing the appearance of pores is to get rid of the dirt and bacteria trapped inside. Clay-based masks are an easy and effective way to help absorb the excess oil and draw out impurities. Kaolin clay is a fave because it is gentle and recommended for both dry and oily, acne prone skin types. Don’t forget to exfoliate your skin beforehand so that you can get deep inside those pores!

  1. Add Facial Oils to Your Skincare Routine

Incorporating a facial oil at the end of your skincare routine will make a tremendous impact on your skin. Periodt! Facial oils are emollients which help to soothe, strengthen and soften your skin. Also, facial oils are occlusive in nature and will help to retain moisture and prevent trans-epidermal water loss (super importanté in the Fall!)

After washing your face, apply a good quality facial oil when your skin is still a little damp. Or, you can use it after a toner, serum and/or moisturizer to help lock in all that goodness. Good quality facial oils should contain a few different plant-based oils to provide an array of nutrients for your skin. Also, different plant-based combinations can enhance the effectiveness of each other.
